Notice to Families: Michigan Firearm Safe Storage Information
Under Michigan’s new laws, beginning October 1, 2025, all public, intermediate, and nonpublic schools must distribute a state-approved Safe Storage Notice annually to the parents or legal guardians of each enrolled student (as required by HB 5451 / MCL 380.1313b).
This notice will include:
An overview of Michigan’s secure storage (child access prevention) law (Public Act 17 of 2023)
Guidance on how to store firearms safely when minors may be present (e.g. locked containers, locking devices, keeping them unloaded)
Definitions, exceptions, and possible legal penalties under state law
Resources and contact information for getting firearm locks and additional safety help
