Student Teachers / Observers

Process for Approval

We will not accept requests directly from a student. All requests must come from an advisor.

    1. The university advisor contacts Spitler to request placement of a student. If a university or a student contacts school staff, please direct them to the Executive Assistant at (studentteacherplacement@northmen.org).
    2. Executive Assistant (EA) checks to see if there is a placement agreement on file with the college/university.
    3. EA sends the PSP packet of forms (Procedures, Application, Disclosure Document, Rep form and I-Chat) to the university advisor for the student to complete.
    4. Packet is received back, reviewed, and an I-Chat background check is completed.
    5. Director of Teaching and Learning (DTL) receives completed packet, reviews and gives approval to move forward.
    6. EA contacts principals to request placement availability.
    7. Principals contact staff to see if someone is willing to host a student teacher (2 week deadline).
    8. Principal lets EA know the name of the staff member that is willing to host.
    9. DTL approves the host teacher.
    10. EA lets the principal know they are approved to set up an interview with the candidate, host teacher and principal (2 week deadline).  Student Observers skip #10, 11, 12, 14 and 15.
    11. EA lets university know that we have a possible placement pending the outcome of the interview.
    12. Principal lets EA know the outcome of the interview and if we are proceeding with the student teacher (approved / not approved). Student Observers do not interview.
    13. EA lets the University know that we have an approved placement.
    14. EA sends information to university for candidate to be fingerprinted within one month of start date. Student Observers are not fingerprinted.
    15. Fingerprint results received and approved.
    16. Student may start their assignment.

Internal only:

  • EA completes PAF.
  • EA sends email to principal, secretary, host teacher, DTL, Tech, registrar, HR, candidate, and  university advisor with approval information.
